Svalbard, Norway
I visited the island group Svalbard on the last few days of May, 2004. Svalbard is only about 1300 km from the North Pole Point, and enjoys midnight sun for four months during summer. In addition to Norwegian settlements, there are also a large Russian settlement, and a smaller Polish one.

Cyprus
I arrived in Cyprus for a one week holiday two days after the Greek Cypriots rejected the EU and UN's proposed reunification of the island, stopping the Turkish North from joining the EU on May 1st, with the rest of Cyprus. I stayed in Ayia Napa, but also visited Lefkosia (Nicosia), the World's only remaining divided capital.

In March, 2004, I spent three days in the capital of Portugal, Lisbon. I explored central Lisbon, the historical Belém area and the southern bank of the river Tejo, where the famous Cristo-Rei statue stands.

I visited Moscow in February 2004. The thing that impressed me the most was the metro. The stations are wonderfully decorated with marble floors, paintings, statues and chandeliers.

I visited New York in June, 2003. I walked over Brooklyn Bridge and explored Downtown Manhattan, including Ground Zero almost two years after the terrorist attacks.

I visited Iceland twice in 2003, first during the last weekend of May, and then again in November. Both times I stayed in Reykjavik, and on the first trip I also visited Þingvellir, Gullfoss and Geysir.

Right before Christmas 2002, I visited Edinburgh and Glasgow in Scotland, UK, with a friend. Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland, and full of historic buildings, while Glasgow is a more pulsating city.

In October, 2002, I visited South Africa. I stayed most of the time in Cape Town, and also travelled to the nearby Cape of Good Hope, Simonstown and Stellenbosch, as well as Sun City and Johannesburg farther away.

I visited this beautiful country in October 2002. The country has some clean and scenic cities, a varied wildlife and lots of space. I tried a tandem sky dive while in Namibia as well.

I spent a few days in Dublin, Ireland, in September, 2002, visiting the Guinness Brewery, Trinity College, Dublin Castle, Temple Bar and other places.

While on a one week vacation in Gran Canaria in August, 2002, with 3 friends from Norway, we hired a car and drove to the Roque Nublo mountain (1803 meters) in the center of the island.

I wanted to spend some days at the beach, and travelled to Montevideo. That turned out to be a bit of a mistake. The beach was the worst one I have ever seen.

From December 1992 until March 1994 I was working as a UN soldier in Mogadishu, Somalia. The United Nations Operation in Somalia (UNOSOM) was established to end war and starvation, and counted about 30,000 soldiers from all over the world.
