Exploring the Catalan Countries

The Catalan Countries are the territories where the Catalan language is spoken. It stretches from Valencia in Spain into the southern region of Pyrénées-Orientales in France. The area also encompasses the Balearic Islands and the Principality of Andorra. I visited Barcelona, Sitges and Andorra in December 2016.

Barcelona is the largest city in the Catalan Countries. The city is the capital of the Spanish autonomous community Catalonia.

Sitges is a small town located 35 kilometers southwest of Barcelona. It is known for its film festival, carnival and gay community. Sitges has been referred to as the Saint-Tropez of Spain.

Andorra, believed to have been founded by Charlemagne, is a landlocked, independent country in the Pyrenees, between Spain and France.
